Adding Storage Over The Toilet Water Closet
What is a “water closet? A water closet is a separate “room” for the toilet in the bathroom in your home.
In reality, our bathroom had ZERO decorations and no storage space above the toilet…not even an area rug!
The main reason for this makeover was that “one thing leads to another” type.
The ultimate goal is to re-design the shelves in the bathroom closet for linens and organizing.
While planning that project, I was looking to make intelligent choices about what to keep there and what would require an alternative permanent location.
The process eventually led to me recognizing that I needed the ideal above toilet storage solution in the bathroom closet to store the bathroom items, such as toilet paper and feminine hygiene products.
DIY Bathroom Shelves For The Toilet
We’ve utilized the same brackets to create storage in our craft rooms, and they’re sturdy when placed in the wall with anchors for drywall.
Instead of getting the original IKEA shelves with brackets, I used Lowes cut one chunk of eight inches of wide wood into three 30-inch shelves.
If you choose this route, you can purchase custom-sized shelves for a low cost. I decided to make mine two inches smaller than the water closet, meaning there is one inch of space on each side.
To add character, I wrapped the wood with the wallpaper I had made up.
Storage Above the Toilet Shelves
To provide additional storage for the shelves’ new design, I bought KUGGIS storage containers at IKEA. They can keep the toiletries out of sight and prevent the shelves from looking messy.
The Poo-Pourri even got the privilege of sitting in the soap dish!
Note: I was a teen for ten years, not fully understanding the power of Poo-Pourri. Today, I can’t praise it enough. We have this scent, and it’s insane. The water closet smells great constantly!
The top shelf is used for the storage of toilet paper.
Decorate The Water Closet.
While I visited New York last fall, an artist was selling her work in the vicinity of Central Park. If she offered prints, including mats, for just $1, I could not refuse her offer. I was wondering where I would place the prints, but I’m grateful I purchased them because they’re just suitable for my tiny space.
We required a new rug for $4 and a new lighting fixture to tie the room together.
It takes work to take good photos of the light fixture after its installation. However, it gives a relaxed mod-vintage style that works well with other lighting in the bathroom! Here’s how it looks:
I did make an impulse purchase of the perfect, small, gold Oblong trashcan from Target.
If you have a tiny bathroom that lacks storage space and doesn’t have a shelf above the toilet, I suggest you immediately purchase shelves brackets or bare floating shelves!
While it’s not quite the dramatic transformation we saw in our larger interior design projects, such as the bedroom, closet, or office, small changes can be incredibly satisfying when you take on these small changes.
I’ve placed the before and post images opposite to each other below. It’s much more relaxing to stroll through the space today. My only regret is that I waited too long to add design and storage to this small space!
